The common name for a dilute solution of
slaked lime (calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2). In
chemistry, it is used to detect the presence
of carbon dioxide. If a gas containing carbon
dioxide is bubbled through limewater, the
solution turns milky owing to the formation
of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Continued
bubbling of the gas causes the limewater to
clear again as the calcium carbonate is
converted to the more soluble calcium
hydrogen carbonate Ca(HCO3)2.
