  1. The common name for a dilute solution of
  2. slaked lime (calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2). In
  3. chemistry, it is used to detect the presence
  4. of carbon dioxide. If a gas containing carbon
  5. dioxide is bubbled through limewater, the
  6. solution turns milky owing to the formation
  7. of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Continued
  8. bubbling of the gas causes the limewater to
  9. clear again as the calcium carbonate is
  10. converted to the more soluble calcium
  11. hydrogen carbonate Ca(HCO3)2.
  12.
